DORCAS Circle

Everyone deserves access to basic necessities like food and clothing, regardless of their financial situation. Dorcas is a one-stop shop in Huerfano County where people can find food, free or very low priced clothing, small wares, and overall support. We are stocked with a variety of items to meet the diverse needs of Huerfano County. We are 100% volunteer-run and we depend on support from the community to keep our various programs accessible for all.

Flamingo Book Club

The Flamingo Book Club inspires a love of reading by providing free books to elementary-aged children and staff in Huerfano and Las Animas County. Partnering with local schools, libraries and organizations, FBC hosts unique literacy events with community partners to engage families and educators. Each month, students receive books to build personal libraries and develop lifelong reading habits. From Forgotten to Forever Rescue & Transport

Dedicated to rescuing abandoned and neglected animals in Huerfano County since 2015, we provide comprehensive medical care, rehabilitation, and forever homes. We've taken in numerous dogs and cats throughout the county—this year managing several complex cases, including three dogs diagnosed with cancer. Your donations fund medical care through our local vet, food supplies, and vetting assistance for community members in need, giving every forgotten pet a second chance.

Huerfano County Historical Society

We are tomorrow’s ancestors. The Huerfano Heritage Center contains records of local history from 1890 through the present, and is heavily utilized by visitors wishing to learn more about their ancestors, and what life was like for them here in Huerfano County. We are raising money to continue digitizing the newspaper collection from 1952 onward. Your donation will help ensure your life experiences in Huerfano County will be preserved and made available to future generations.

La Veta Public Library District

Support our Growth Tree Capital Fundraiser! We're raising funds to purchase an additional building to expand event spaces, collections, and services. Recent programs have drawn 60+ adults and 75+ youth—outgrowing our current space. The library has committed $250,000 to this project.

La Veta Trails

La Veta Trails is a volunteer stewardship nonprofit dedicated to restoring and preserving trails and public lands in Huerfano and Las Animas Counties that connect people to the outdoors, inspire volunteerism, and promote the health and economic vitality of the region. In partnership with local, state and federal agencies and schools, LVT engages diverse volunteers in priority projects that address barriers to outdoor access, improve ecological outcomes, and support the long-term sustainability of outdoor recreation for future generations.

La Veta Village Assisted Living Community

The first of its kind in Huerfano County, La Veta Village Assisted Living provides care in a compassionate and supportive environment for seniors in the heart of downtown La Veta. With a focus on dignity, independence, and personalized care, La Veta Village is dedicated to enriching the lives of its residents in a warm, community-centered setting. We are not a nursing home with medical staff as some assume, but instead a place where people do live independently with helping hands to assist in time of need to help with medication, personal care or food preparation.

Los Huerfanos Animal Welfare Association

Committed to improving animal welfare in Huerfano County and surrounding areas, we provide affordable spay/neuter services, vaccinations, and microchip identification for companion animals. Our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program addresses the challenges of community cat overpopulation through humane, sustainable spay neuter practices. By offering accessible care and collaborating with local veteriarian partners, we strive to reduce shelter intake, prevent suffering, and strengthen the bond between people and pets across our rural communities.

The purpose of the Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble is to provide music that inspires, uplifts and entertains. The Sangre de Cristo Vocal Arts Ensemble’s motto is to “Make a Joyful Noise” or “Sing for Joy.

Shii Koeii Community Farm

We provide the people of Huerfano County with local high quality produce (without chemical pesticides or fertilizers), homebaked breads, goat cheese and hand-made pastries at affordable prices, while educating others in small-scale farming through internships and volunteer opportunities.

Spanish Peaks Arts Council

Serving Huerfano County, Spanish Peaks is a critical access hospital and comprehensive care campus nestled at the foot of majestic mountains in Walsenburg, CO. We offer 20‑bed hospital services, specialty and family clinics, and a retail pharmacy along with a variety of services. Our 90‑bed Veterans Community Living Center—unique on‑campus in Colorado—provides personalized nursing care, engaging activities, and veteran-centered support in a dignified, mountain-view setting.

Spanish Peaks Library District

Public library situated on the first floor of the historic Huerfano County High School/Middle School building, the library offers a wide range of resources and services to the community, including books, audiobooks, DVDs, access to the internet, computers and all kinds of games. Other free services include; notary, public meeting rooms equipped with laptop and projector, research databases and community programming. Funds will go toward building expansion.

Spark the Change Colorado

Since 2021, the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Huerfano County has connected adults 55+ with meaningful volunteer roles that improve rural community health.In the past year alone, 36 RSVP volunteers served 1,300+ hours across 10 partner organizations. Your donation to Huerfano Gives helps cover mileage and meal reimbursements and recognizes volunteers through celebration events, coffee hours, and appreciation gifts—so they can keep showing up for our community.
